Hello to you. Let's get odd. I wanted to make a video regarding the future of this channel.
In the year two thousand... and twenty...
This video was extremely and heavily inspired/ripped off from the YouTube channel called Life Meet Lightning. Their channel is all about all things electrical and maths. He's a jack of all trades and master of fun. You should check that channel out.
So a short while ago, I passed 100 subs. I probably should have made a thank you video for that, but I didn't. But thank you very much for subscribing. I'm currently now at 122 subs, which is good and great, and that's part of why I'm making this video. My first video went up on September 8th, 2020, so it's been about four months.
I've been experimenting with shorts, mostly like short drum videos, and I don't necessarily know how shorts work. I don't think anyone really does. Some of my shorts will get like 20 views in a couple of days, and then some of them will go to 400, 500, or even a thousand, which is great, but some of them get likes, some of them don't, some of them get subs, most of them don't, so it's great that they're getting views, but it's not really doing a lot to grow the channel.
But I just wanted to speak directly to my current subscribers. I want this channel to be a resource for you, whether that's entertaining, informational, or educational. The drumming videos don't do as well as the gaming videos. Do you think I should give up drumming? It wouldn't be the first time. Or do you think I should put less focus on the drumming? I kind of wanted to combine the two, but people don't seem to be responding as much to the drumming as the gaming.
I would hope that any one or more of my videos would inspire you to create something of your own, whether that's a YouTube channel or a podcast or a blog. Let me know if there's anything that I can do to help you. I'm not an expert video creator at all, but if there's anything in any of my videos that you liked or you want to know how I did it, definitely let me know, and I'll do my best to help.
I don't want to be all corny and I would never tell you this to your face, but since I'm speaking to a camera, and I'm speaking to you, like philosophically I guess, I think you should pursue your passions, no matter what that is. I could probably speak a year straight talking about why I started a YouTube channel, but here's one story. Here's a tidbit. So I studied music in college, and then I studied video game sound design at a vocational college. I did an internship in video game sound design, and I did like a few, maybe one or two paid projects, but I never really got traction. I was working corporate office jobs for 12 years. Two of them, I kind of liked, but for the most part, I just hated that environment. I hated those types of jobs, but I did it because you got to do what you got to do.
So about a year ago, I was working at an office job, and I was wrongfully terminated. Have you ever worked at a job, and you have an a-hole boss, and there's nothing you can do. You're powerless. You're at the bottom of the totem pole, and no matter what you do, the bosses have the final say, and you can do everything right, and if the boss is in a bad mood, and the boss blames you, even if you did everything right, if you did nothing wrong, there's really nothing you can do. It reminds me of that Jim Carrey quote. He says "you could fail at something you don't want, so you might as well take a chance at doing something you love." And love or hate Jim Carrey, he was great in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Sonic the Hedgehog. I really love that quote.
And here's another short story, so after I was wrongfully terminated, I got another job, an office job, because that's all I know. I mean, I've been doing it for 12 years, that's really all I know, and that's all I went for. So I got hired for another job, and after the first day, I didn't like it. I didn't want it, but I feel like, you know, this is what I have to do. I'm like stuck here. After one day, I was already feeling stuck and pressured. And I went to work for my second day, and I was looking through my phone, and I came across a Kobe Bryant video, and he said "Love what you do, and if you love what you do and it makes you happy, then all the hard work and perseverance will pay off." So I went into work that morning for my second day, I emailed HR, I said, this is not a good fit, I resign. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I resigned. So I quit after one day, and looking back, that could be a good decision or a bad decision. I don't regret that at all. For me personally, that was the best decision for me because I just can't be in that environment anymore. I can't be in it for one more second.
Here's another tiny quick story that's probably going to be super long. Have you heard of Joe Zieja? He's an excellent voice actor for video games and anime I think. Here's a fun(?) fact, many, many years ago, like I think 2012, he and I participated in a Final Fantasy VI Remix competition. He wasn't in the industry, I'm still not in any industry, but he did win first place in that competition for ocremix.org, and he's a very good composer and arranger and producer of music. He also got into voice acting; he's a great voice actor. He's done many projects. We're not friends or anything like that.
I'm not friends with anyone.
He went on to a great career, but there's something on his website that really resonated with me. It's not even a sentence, it's just a phrase. He mentions having an allergy to office life, and that really resonates with me completely. Just the thought of doing that kind of work, it really kind of makes me sick. I don't mean to put down that kind of work, a lot of people prosper and thrive in that lifestyle, but I feel like I was trying to force a, whatever the phrase is, a round peg into a square hole or a square peg into a round hole. I was trying to force that in my life for 12 years. I thought that's what I was supposed to do, but I feel like there's something else out there for me, something different.
There's a lot more to it, but that, in essence, is why I started a YouTube channel. I wanted to marry my two passions, which is drums and video games, and somehow affect people, somehow help people in some way, and that's why I'm making this video, because I want to know what you like about my videos, what you don't like, what you think I could or should focus on, what do you think I could or should focus on less, why you subscribed, why you might unsubscribe.
I did notice that the Final Fantasy VII Remake predictions video has gotten significantly more views, and that's great, and that seems to resonate with a lot of people, so I just want to know if I should make more of that content. And for me, like I worked hard on that video. It took me days to capture all that footage. Capturing game play footage is surprisingly tedious, and it's actually not fun at all. It--it takes the fun out of the game, but that's part of the project, that's part of the channel, and I'm, of course, willing to do it to make great content for you folks.
I want this channel to be a safe space where we can stay hidden, and not even the government can find us. So if possible, if you can, let me know what kind of stuff you like on this channel, and what you don't like, and what kind of stuff you might want to see. If it's in my realm of capability, and it's stuff that I can make and want to make, then I'll definitely lean towards that kind of stuff for you folks.
So thank you for following me on this journey; thank you for subscribing, and thank you for watching. You can follow me on Instagram, Twitter, at odd_drummer. My Instagram is mostly filled with drumming stuff for now. I don't know what I'm doing. If you take anything from this video, it's to pursue your passions. Do something that you love. Start small and you never know where it's going to end up in a year from now, five years from now, 10 years from now, but you got to start small to end up big. So stay odd and keep on playing.
