Let's take a look at the Final Fantasy VII Remake Acoustic Arrangements CD. Let's get odd.
If you saw my latest video on the top 7 Final Fantasy VII Remake tracks, you know that I'm currently on a mission to sing the praises of this amazing game, because the experience of playing this game honestly helped me out of a really dark place at the beginning of this year. So here's a question: Is it possible to spoil a music album? I think it is. Before we start, I would suggest for you to check out this album on your own, because whilst listening to the first track even, I was pleasantly surprised at the arrangements I was hearing, and after listening to the whole album, I highly recommend you purchase the album and check it out for yourself. So let's take a look.
Track 1 - Prelude Medley
Arranger Kevin Penkin writes that this arrangement of Prelude Medley composed by Nobuo Uematsu is in two parts. "Prelude" jumps from tempo to tempo, between pianist Mariko Taguchi and the violinist Atsuki Yoshida. "Bombing Mission" incorporates fast aggressive passages between cello and contrabass. I was pleasantly surprised to hear "Bombing Mission" in here, and Penkin mentions that there are also hints to Uematsu's other works.
Track 2 - Sector 7 Undercity Medley
Arranger Yuya Mori writes that this arrangement of Sector 7 Undercity Medley, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, features an unconventional mix of viola, flute, and guitar. These instruments combined can produce intense sounds and powerful music. The instruments play off one another, almost like characters in a story. The track starts with a beautiful arrangement of Tifa's theme, followed by the melody of the main theme of Final Fantasy VII. It's amazing how seamless the textures of the three instruments go together.
Track 3 - Jessie's Theme
Arranger Atsuki Yoshida writes that this arrangement of "Jessie's Theme," composed by Masashi Hamauzu, has a touch of the dramatic, through the use of guitar plucking, a string quartet, and a clarinet. The viola provides the soothing melody over the pizzicato. The piece transitions into 6/8 time, and the wavering inner part is meant to represent trepidation. At one point during the track, the violin and clarinet harmonize, giving a weightlessness to the track. There was no theme for Jessie in the original game, but I feel that the track and this arrangement are welcome additions into the Final Fantasy VII Remake soundtrack.
Track 4 - The Turks' Theme
Arranger Ai Kuwabara writes that this arrangement of "The Turks' Theme," composed by Nobuo Uematsu, conveys a tense, uneasy vibe, using only piano, flute, violin, and contrabass. As Kuwabara is a jazz pianist and composer, the influence of jazz is readily apparent in this track. She also portrayed the connection between the Turks and Shinra, as the second verse is a mash-up of Shinra's Theme and Turks' Theme. I found this arrangement to be really fun and unique, and surprising that she was able to expand the simple theme of the Turks into a very intricate and playful arrangement.
Track 5 - Let the Battles Begin - Fight On Medley
Arranger Yasunori Nishiki writes that in this arrangement of "Let the Battles Begin - Fight On Medley," composed by Nobuo Uematsu, he tried to make the acoustic qualities of the instruments shine. The arrangement opens with "Fight On!" due to its impactful intro. He then follows it by weaving in phrases from the original song, as well as the transition. He was able to switch to "Let the Battles Begin" part way through, yet retained the elements from "Fight On!", and maintained a synergy between the two.
Track 6 - Aerith's Theme - Home Again
Arranger Kenta Higashiohji writes that this arrangement of "Aerith's Theme - Home Again," composed by Nobuo Uematsu, was a challenge in that they decided to play things as straight as possible. Along with Atsuki Yoshida on the violin and clarinet, and Higashiohji on the guitar, they recorded everything in one go without a click track. It was a tough recording session, but not using a click track gave the arrangement an organic, almost poetic quality.
Track 7 - Expressway Medley
Arranger Kenta Higashiohji writes about the arrangement of "Expressway Medley," composed by Mitsuto Suzuki, that the original songs have airy light chords and simple, yet memorable melodies. The arrangement opens with "Midnight Rendezvous," and then seamlessly transitions into "Collapsed Expressway," while the piano stoically plays its notes in a present, but never overpowering manner. Piano, violin, and contrabass make for a curious combination and compelling acoustic arrangement.
Track 8 - Ghastly Medley
Arranger Taro Makido writes about this arrangement of "Ghastly Medley," composed by Masashi Hamauzu and Yashinori Nishiki, that "Haunted" is very distinctive. It uses irregular time signatures and modern chord progression to stand out. He wove the violin and cello throughout to provide a kind of dialogue between the first half and the second. In the latter half of the arrangement, "Ghoul," he applied a variety of techniques to bring it to its crescendo. Atsuki Yoshida on the violin is at his emotional best here by providing a vibrato that would feel at home in a Tchaikovsky accompaniment.
Track 9 - J-E-N-O-V-A - Quickening
Arranger Atsuki Yoshida writes that this arrangement of "J-E-N-O-V-A - Quickening," composed by Nobuo Uematsu and Tadayoshi Makino, consists of a five-string quartet. He wanted to emphasize Jenova's eeriness and the song's speed and power, and wound up with a very rich arrangement. There's a lot going on, including intense contrabass ad-libs and a violin solo. He recreated the almost mechanical repetition of the original song's opening in arpeggio, and went on to play with the song's distinctive bass line, using it as a motif throughout. The arrangement the track also features melodies from a number of songs related to Jenova in one way or another.
Track 10 - One-Winged Angel - Rebirth
Arranger Yuya Mori writes that this arrangement of "One-Winged Angel - Rebirth," composed by Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu, and Yashinori Nishiki, is made up of the flute, piano, and four string instruments. The flute enriches the song, the piano adds a dash of color, and the heavy use of an open string gives the arrangement more impact. He aimed to emphasize three concepts: the beauty found in dissonance, the interplay between pianissimo and fortissimo, and Sephiroth's insidious, yet charismatic, chaotic nature. He also peppered in the original track and other battle songs within the arrangement.

Let's take a look at the Final Fantasy VII Remake Acoustic Arrangements CD. The CD features 10 tracks from the Final Fantasy VII Remake Soundtrack, arranged for small acoustic ensembles. The ensembles sometimes consist of piano, string quartets, clarinet, flute, and other instruments. The original soundtrack was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu, and Mitsuto Suzuki, and the tracks were arranged by various Arrangers and Musicians. These are a very unique take on the music that we love; I highly recommend that you check this CD out!
