Is the Wii U backwards compatible? Yes; yes it is. When you load a Nintendo Wii game into the Wii U, the Wii U essentially becomes a Wii and you are able to play nearly all Wii games on the Wii U. The Wii U also has the Virtual Console, and you are able to purchase and play games from the NES, SNES, Game Boy Advance, N64, DS, Wii, and TurboGrafx16. The Wii Shop used to have even more games on it, but it closed back in January 2019. So yes, the Nintendo Wii U is backwards compatible.
