Let's get odd.
So let's set the scene up. In Chapter 12 of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Fight for Survival, Avalanche is fighting Shinra and trying to prevent them from dropping the Sector 7 plate and killing a bunch of people who live on the plate and below in the Sector 7 slums. Cloud starts making the climb towards the top to meet Barret and the others, but Tifa and Aerith stay behind to help take care of Wedge, but as Wedge starts to feel better, Tifa has a change of heart and decides that she needs to help the others, so she tells Aerith that she needs to "Get Marlene to safety, right?"
I remember there was a lot of speculation as to why or how Aerith knew who Marlene was, as they never really talked to each other about Marlene, but let's back up a bit. In Chapter 11, Haunted, Tifa sees a ghost child. She sees Marlene, or thinks she sees Marlene. It then cuts to a flashback of Tifa speaking to Marlene inside of Seventh Heaven. This is the most likely explanation as to why or how Aerith knows that Tifa needs her to get Marlene to safety.
Alright, back to Chapter 12. First off, I just want to say I really like how the developers created this scene. After Aerith walks into Seventh Heaven, she starts by saying She knows Marlene is scared, sitting underneath the sink, crying. So Aerith makes sure to gently let Marlene know that she knows who she is. She immediately lets Marlene know that she's a friend of Tifa's, and she also mentions Cloud and Barret. Aerith tells her that Tifa told her to take care of Marlene. She tells Marlene that Seventh Heaven is not safe now, so she is going to take her somewhere safer, and she extends her hand.
Aerith probably doesn't have the heart to tell her that, yes, most likely, the bar and her home are going to be destroyed, so she extends both her arms, and Marlene slowly and still reluctantly moves in closer to hug Aerith. Aerith continues to try to reinsure Marlene, but Marlene starts crying, and that's when Marlene fully embraces Aerith.
So I looked over the scene a few times. It doesn't appear that Aerith actively or intentionally does anything, and she doesn't say anything either. There's just this kind of static effect that occurs. It kind of startles Marlene, and she steps back slowly, but Aerith also exerts a sound. which leads me to believe that what happened was unintentional, but because Aerith puts her finger to her lips, she knows fully what happened. She tells Marlene not to tell anyone what she felt or saw, and Marlene agrees, but what could it be?
Marlene is visibly and audibly calmer after this moment, and her tears are gone. Whatever she witnessed, it fully reinsured her that everything was going to be alright, and that she could put her trust into Aerith. So let's think about this.
We know that Aerith has an effect on people, especially when she touches them. Back in Chapter 2, Fateful Encounters, Cloud is walking around Sector 8 and runs into a visibly distressed Aerith, but Cloud cannot see what's bothering her. When she grabs Cloud's arm and asks him to help her, the camera closes into Cloud's eyes as he can now see the whispers before him. When the group meets Red XIII in Chapter 16, The Belly of the Beast, he is very violent, almost feral, but Aerith ensures everyone that this child is a friend. She puts her hand on his head and he immediately becomes calm and begins speaking to the group. In the next chapter, Chapter 17, Deliverance from Chaos, Red XIII explains that the dementors I mean flying hooded ghost figures are whispers or arbiters of fate, and they show up to ensure that no one will be able to alter destiny's course, and he found this knowledge of the whispers when Aerith reached out to him.
So back to Marlene. She could have seen something. She could have seen nothing. Whatever she saw or didn't see, it surprised her, caused her to step back a bit, but it did have a calming effect on her. Maybe she saw a vision of the future, and Aerith somehow ensured her that everything was going to be okay. I've come across a few theories saying that Marlene could be an Ancient as well.
Maybe that's the reason they had some sort of mutual understanding and connection, and it's possible that Aerith was just letting her know to keep this a secret. We don't really know much about Marlene's birth mother, except that her name was Eleanor and she was married to Dyne, and she died when Shinra destroyed Barret's hometown, Corel. I mean, it's possible that Marlene could be an Ancient. She does seem to have an ability to sense certain things.
Here's what I don't think Aerith showed to Marlene. I don't think Marlene saw a bunch of whispers, because I think seeing a bunch of flying hooded ghost figures would scare a child. I don't necessarily think Marlene saw the future, because I'm not sure a child would understand what all of that meant. It might be a combination of a few things. Maybe Marlene did see some form of glimpse into the future, but not only that, but because both she and Aerith have some sort of connection, Aerith was able to provide some form of calming power over Marlene, even if it was unintentional. Aerith has powers of the Cetra inside her, which is a mysterious power. Without any words, Aerith was able to convey to Marlene somehow that everything was going to be okay, and that she was someone that Marlene could trust. Or it's possible Marlene somehow saw into Aerith's heart, and she knew that Aerith was going to, perhaps one day sacrifice herself to save the planet. I mean, who knows? Well, I guess the developers know. Nomura definitely knows. I'd love to know your thoughts. What do you think Aerith showed to Marlene when they embraced? Let me know down in the comments.
